Christa Elfriede Kempe Sommer
Elfriede Kempe Sommer died February 7, 1999 of kidney failure and complications due to multiple myeloma.
She was born Nov. 28, 1926 in Dresden, Saxony, Germany to Gustav Emil Kempe and Anna Emilie Bartzsch. She married Edwin Emil Sommer Nov. 9, 1944 in Salt Lake City. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple Nov 9, 1945. She emigrated to the United States with her parents in 1929. Christa was active in the LDS Church and retired from Granite School District after having worked at Rotary Training Center and Hartvigsen School with mentally handicapped children and young adults. She had a deep love for these individuals and had a great talent for working with them. She also loved traveling and enjoyed people of all kinds and cultures. She served in many callings in the church, including serving a mission with her husband in the exodus program of the Church. She was a wonderful support to her immediate and extended family and adored her grandchildren, taking great pride in them.
She is survived by her devoted husband and care giver Ed, children Eileen and Joe West, Stan and Pam Sommer, Paul and Cindee Sommer, Richard and Janice Sommer, Sheldon and Cindee Sommer 21 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sisters, Herta Schreyer, Elsie Bargmann, sisters-in-law Helmi Sommer and Erica Kempe and many nieces and nephews.
The family thanks all the friends, neighbors, family, doctors, nurses and IHC Hospice who have cared for Christa and have shown her love. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Granite Education Foundation for Hartvigsen School, in Memory of Christa Sommer, 382 East 3605 South, SLC, Ut. 84115
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Salt Lake Cottonwood Heights Stake Center, 6890 South 2225 East. Friends may visit the family Wednesday, February 10th from 6-8 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary, 3115 East 7800 South or Thursday, February 11th from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center.
