The Rev. Dr. Richard T. Hinz, 83, of Fredericksburg President Emeritus of the Southeastern District, LCMS, died in Christ on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 after a decades-long battle with Parkinson’s. His earthly journey full and complete, he closed his eyes in the comfort of his bed at home and has now opened them to the resurrection celebration of the Lord Jesus.

The son of Rev. and Mrs. Carl A. Hinz, Rich was born in Mason City, Iowa in 1934. He met the love of his life, Deanna, while growing up there at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They married in 1958, and just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 18.

Richard earned a Bachelor's degree from Concordia College, Milwaukee in 1954 and Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in 1959. He was Fulbright Scholar at Karl Ruprecht Universitat in Heidelberg, Germany from 1959 to 1960. He received a Doctor of Laws degree from Concordia College, Bronxville, New York in 1981 and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory, North Carolina in 1990.

Dr. Hinz began his pastoral career in 1960 as Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Seaford, Delaware, then served as Dean of Christian Instruction at Baltimore Lutheran High School (now Concordia Prep) from 1965 to 1970. In early 1970, he began his tour of duty as Executive Secretary of Mission for the Southeastern District. By 1978, the District consisted of some 200 congregations throughout the southeast belonging to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), engaging in the mission of sharing the crucified and risen Christ within a wide variety of communities, and sending missionaries across the globe to reach the world with the gospel. In 1978, Dr. Hinz was elected President of the Southeastern District and served in that capacity for five consecutive terms until 1994. In 1994, Richard became a part-time Associate Pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Springfield, VA, where he continued to preach and teach and write until his retirement in 2005.

Current Southeastern District President John Denninger writes, “Richard Hinz, along with his wife, Deanna, touched and shaped many of our lives throughout the Southeastern District and beyond through his deep understanding of the grace given through Jesus as Servant Leader. Rich became not only a teacher of servant leadership, but also a conduit of that kingly service in the way he served in many capacities in the National church body, the District, and the local congregation.”

Dr. Hinz authored several books, Bible study volumes and resources, including a transformative booklet called “My Odyssey with Parkinson’s Disease” published by and available from the We Raise Foundation (formerly Wheat Ridge Ministries) of Chicago.
Rev. Dr. Hinz is survived by his faithful and caring wife of 60 years, Deanna nee Schaper; and four sons, Paul (Sally) of Saginaw, Mich., John (Amy) of Fredericksburg, Va., Timothy (Leanne) of Williamsburg, Va., and Stephen (Elizabeth) of Austin, Texas. Richard also rejoiced in the gift of 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved big brother, Rev. Dr. Frederick C. Hinz of Fredericksburg, Va. and Flushing, N.Y.
