Just before her 12th birthday in 1927, the family moved to Greeley to be closer to other family and attend a German Church, Saint Paul's Congregational. Emma was confirmed in 1930 — a 78 year member. Church was very important to Emma and her family for her entire life.In Greeley, they lived in several houses some of which her father built. She could still remember the addresses of each of those houses. All of the kids helped the family by working in the fields, butchering turkeys at the icehouse, or helping their father with construction. She attended College High School graduating in 1934. She then went to work with two of her sisters, at Woolworths, working 6-to-8-hour days a week for $10 per week. She met Ivan Klein at church, and they were married in her parent's house on June 16, 1940. They were married 64 years until his death in 2005. Ivan owned the Oliver dealership in Greeley. Expecting to be drafted, he sold the business.
