It is with deep sorrow that we record the death of Harold Hotop, youngest son of Mr Lewis Hotop, Queenstown, which took place at Sydney on Friday last. The shock which the news occasioned was very great as the only warning of his end was a cable received by Mr Hotop on Thursday that his son was seriously ill with pneumonia. This was followed on Friday by a further cable apprising him of his death. Deceased, who was 29 years of age, went to Sydney about five years ago, and had since occupied a responsible position there in a large dispensary. Born in Queenstown, he spent his days till early manhood here and it can be said of him, not as a posthumous tribute, but of a truth, that no Queenstown boy was ever before, or has been since, so popular with young and old of all classes as was he. Some way or other Harold, or "Cam," by which name he was well known, was different from other boys of his age. Though at all times fall of fun and mischief, he had always a sympathetic ear for everyone's troubles and possessed a wonderful attraction for old people, in whose hearts he established himself as a sort of idol. The most sincere sympathy prevails for Mr Hotop and the other members of his family in the sore bereavement which has overtaken them. It might be mentioned that when he received the sad news Mr Hotop was in Dunedin, where he has been for the past five weeks, part of the time somewhat indisposed—a circumstance which his many friends will regret to hear of. (Lake Wakatip Mail, Aug. 15, 1911)
