His birth name was Heinz Erich Solomon Horwitz. His family escaped Nazi Germany, moving to Argentina in 1938. He joined the Bolivian Army before moving to the United States, where he first served in the US Air Force, then in the US Army National Guard.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bernhard Horwitz and Hilda Manheimer Horwitz; and brothers-in-law Anthony Calderone and Sebastian Calderone. He was survived by his wife of 59 years; a daughter; a grandson; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; a cousin; and several nieces and nephews.
Interment on September 28, 2018 in Arlington National Cemetery (original plans were for burial in Riverside Cemetery, Albion, MI.)
