Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (October 2, 2018):

John Folino Gallo joined his Heavenly Father on 27 September 2018.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary, two brothers, three sisters, seven children, 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Praying of the rosary will begin at 8:30 AM on 4 October at Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista, followed by a funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM. A committal with military honors will follow immediately at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

John was born in Falerna, Italy, of Francesca and Rosario Folino Gallo, on 8 January 1932. He immigrated to the United States with his mother to join his father in Pittsburgh. Eventually the family moved to Lisbon, Ohio, where he spent his youth.

John’s academic achievements include an engineering degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa., and a master’s degree from American University in Washington, DC.

While in college, he met the love of his life, Rosemary. After graduation, they married in Wireton, PA, and began their life journey with a move to his first job at Lockheed Corporation in California.

After a year, he entered active duty, beginning a 21-year career as an Army engineer. His service took him to a variety of assignments throughout the US and in France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and one combat tour in Vietnam, where he earned the Bronze Star. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1976.

After retirement he continued his service to the nation as a civilian employee of the US Army. His service brought him to Sierra Vista in 1978. He served 17 years, retiring at Fort Huachuca in 1994.

A man of faith throughout his life, John devoted his energies to Catholic communities wherever he was. For 40 years he was active in the Ft. Huachuca and Sierra Vista Catholic families. He sang in the church choir and served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and on the parish advisory council, and was a Benedictine Oblate at Holy Trinity Monastery.

John loved well. He touched many lives in his long life’s journey. His life was devoted to his Lord, his wife, his family, his country, and his community. We will all miss his love of adventure, his welcoming spirit, his smile, and the twinkle in his eye. Those who could call him "friend" were many and blessed.
