Elmer served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 1, 1941 to October, 1945 and was selected and honored as the "typical selectee" for the post of Fort Monroe, Virginia. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant when he received his honorable discharge.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Dennis Hamil of the Medical Clinic of Houston for his exceptional care of Mr. Elbin during many years of his life. Dr. Hamil's care and compassion gave Elmer a better and longer life. Special appreciation also goes to Dr. Guerra at University Place Nursing Care, his nurse Lillian Perez, and the wonderful nursing staff at University Place who took care of him, and to the private nurses, Brenda Burkes and Nicki Adams during his final weeks.

Elmer faced every obstacle in his life with courage, determination, and honesty, from cancer to heart disease, the loss of his dear wife, and a continuous decline of his lifestyle as his health deteriorated. He never complained and never lost his sense of humor.
