Born in Alt Patschkau, Kries Neisse, Schlesien, Germany. The province of Schlesien was depopulated of Germans after the war and is now part of Poland. He never saw his parents or his home after the war.

First son of Josef and Anna Wagner, brother to Josef Wagner, and Stefan Wagner. Husband to Magadalena, daughter Monica Wagner and granddaughter Anita.

Because he was wounded in the jaw during the war and it was a visible wound and he had no farm as his home had been appropriated by Poles, Alois thought he would never find a woman to marry. He advertised in the paper that he was looking for a wife and the ad was answered by Magdalena.
