Charles Frank Nawrot, 73, of Summerfield, Florida, passed away on February 21, 2017. He was born to Julia and Charles Nawrot on February 21, 1943 in Chicago, IL. Chuck graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a Degree in Biochemistry. He married Karen Ann Kilkelly in Las Vegas, NV on January 1, 1986.

Starting out in his career he worked in academia in the Midwest and Canada then jumped into the corporate world with 3M in St. Paul, MN; Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, IL; Centocor, Malvern, PA; started his own company Tektagen, Malvern, PA; Baxter Laboratories, Irvine, CA; started another company, Theracyte in Irvine, CA then went back to academia to Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA - retired and moved to Florida.

He loved to travel with Karen - from climbing the Himalayas, visiting temples in Kathmandu and Bangkok, water rafting on the Seti River, snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, making snow angels atop Mt. Cook in New Zealand, riding horses at Dude Ranches in Colorado, celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich, sailing off the coast of Maui, checking out the wineries in Temecula, Santa Barbara, New York Finger Lakes region and any wine tasting regions in between and having lunch with his in-laws, Joan and Paul in the Red Square in Moscow, watching Swan Lake in St. Petersburg, cruising through the Panama Canal, floating up the Danube, kicking back in the Caribbean and eating at fish boils in Door County.

Chuck was an avid runner - completing 13 marathons and countless half marathons and 10Ks - along with all the medals and tee shirts that he acquired. He also was an avid swimmer and lifted weights. He volunteered cooking dinners in the kitchen for the community he lived in on Tuesday evenings, sang in the Spirited Singers to residents of Assisted Living and Memory Care facilities and also sang in the Fountain choir - putting on shows twice a year. He loved all of his animals - fur, feathers and fins - and especially taking his beloved dog, Heidi - who he rescued from the streets of Augusta - out for daily runs and for rides in the golf cart.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Julia and Charles Nawrot and his brother, Eugene Smuda. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his two sons, Michael (Kelly Powell) Nawrot; Adam Nawrot; his sister, Dorothy (Richard) Leyendecker; sister Judy Nawrot; two nephews, Robert (Cindy) Leyendecker and John (Mary) Leyendecker; sister-in-law Joan Smuda and niece, Janine Smuda.

Interment will be at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery, Niles, IL. on August 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Chuck’s memory to Hospice of Marion County, 3231 SW 34th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34474 or Humane Society of Marion County, 701 NW 14th Road, Ocala, FL 34475 would be appreciated.
