Nola Schubert Penn

Nola Penn, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 in Salem, VA. She was born in Los Angeles, CA on May 4, 1929 and shortly after moved to Salt Lake City, UT, where she grew up with her mother, Vera Kirkwood Schubert and her grandparents, Albert and Amanda Kirkwood. Her mother then married Fred Willis Strobel. At age 13 the family moved to Minneapolis, MN and later to Washington D.C.

Nola met her future husband, J. C. Penn on a trip with friends to Virginia Beach. They married in 1951 and moved to Roanoke, VA, where they raised their four children on Lake Drive. Nola was a charter member of Hidden Valley Country Club, where she and her husband were avid golfers. In recent years, she enjoyed playing bridge with her close friends at both the Brambleton Center and Hidden Valley Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clay Penn; daughter, Katherine Boone Penn; son, James Kirkwood Penn; parents, Vera and Fred Strobel and Lloyd Schubert.

Nola is survived by her son, Thomas Randolph Penn, his wife, Alison and their three children, triplets, Eli, Logan and Collin; son, Robert Clay Penn, his daughter and son-in-law, Whitney and Aaron Yost and their two children, Jalen and Colt.

Nola requested a private ceremony for family. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a donation in her name to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem or any other worthy charity of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey’s South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Ave SW, Roanoke VA 24018. 540-989-3131.
