William C. Sherwood, 37, of New York City and formerly of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, at Beth Israel Hospital, New York.

William C. Sherwood
William C. Sherwood, 37, of New York City and formerly of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Feb. 10, in Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. He had been hospitalized the last 69 days and ill for nine months.

He was born in Washington, D.C., and came to Battle Creek at age 2. He attended Lakeview Schools until 10th grade. While in the 9th grade, he wond the grand prize at the city Youth Talent Exhibit in 1967 for his musical composition Sonata for Violin and Piano. During his last two years of high school, he attended Interlochen School for the Arts, graduating in 1970. He then attended Juliard School of Music for two years and graduated from Hunter College in 1978. While at Lakeview Schools he played with the Battle Creek Symphony and the Kalamazoo Youth Symphony orchestras as a violinst and was a recipient of many musical awards and scholarships.

He was an independent filmmaker and most recently wrote scripts for Columbia and Sam Goldwyn studios. He had written and produced the movie Parting Glances, which in 1986 won the best feature film award at the USA Film Festival in Dallas. The same film was selected as one of the 10 best feature films in 1986 by the Times of London. He is a member of the Writer's Guild, and in Battle Creek, had been a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Surviving are his parents, Leslie W. and Agnes E. Sherwood of Battle Creek; a half brother, Timothy J. Sherwood, of Akron, Ohio; and a half sister, Sandra L. Sherwood of Export, Pa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Memorial donations may go tot he Interlochen Center of the Arts. Arrangements by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.
