SIR E. HOLT-WILSON - ORGANIZATION OF SECURITY SERVICES
Brigadier Sir Eric Holt-Wilson, C.M.G. D.S.O., who during his long career had much to do with the organization of military security and intelligence services, died on Sunday at Lacock, Wiltshire. The eldest son of the Rev. Thomas Holt-Wilson, he was born in 1875 and educated at Harrow and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was in the cricket and football elevens and was champion revolver shot. He entered the Royal Engineers in 1895. He later held many posts, mostly connected with intelligence and security, especially during the 1914-18 war. In 1915 he was a member of the Inter-Allied Intelligence Bureau in Paris, and after the end of hostilities was appointed Chief of the Police Commission on the Rhine. He was deputy commandant War Department Constabulary from 1927 to 1942, and had been honorary commandant since 1933. He was the author of many official handbooks on security, intelligence, and police duties in peace and war. (The Times, March 28, 1950)

The funeral of Brigadier Sir Eric Holt- Wilson took place at Bowden Hill Church, Lacock, Wiltshire, yesterday. The Rev. W.F.E. Burnley officiated. Among those present were:- Lady Holt-Wilson (widow), Commander and Mrs. D.S. Holt-Wilson (son and daughter-in-law). Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Pollock (son-in-law and daughter). Mrs. Stirling, Miss Susan Holt-Wilson (grand-daughter), Mr. J. Stirling, Mr. and Mrs. C. Stirling, Mrs. John Holt-Wilson, Brigadier-General J.S. Mellor (Chief Constable), Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. D. O. Trench (Assistant Chief Constable, representing War Department Constabulary), Major J. S. Strong (representing War office), Captain F.F.F. and Lady Alice Spicer, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Robertson-Glasgow, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Robertson-Glasgow, Miss Talbot, Mr. W.E. Webb, Mrs. C.E. Awdry, Dr. J.B. Lowe, Major and Mrs. C.W. Maggs, Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Gardiner, and Mrs E.C. Barnes. He changed his name by deed poll in 1909 to Holt-Wilson, from Wilson. Children also included eldest daughter Gabrielle Genista (Gay) Fraser, wife of Colin Gall Fraser - engagement announced August 1963. At the time, the widowed Lady Holt-Wilson - formerly Audrey Stirling, his second wife - lived at Canon House, Melksham, Wiltshire.
