Maythel Marie Benedict was born January 1, 1916 to Mary (Kneebone) Benedict and Wilson W. Benedict at Flandreau, SD. She graduated from Flandreau High School in 1933 and then attended Nettleton Commercial College in Sioux Falls, SD. After college Maythel worked in the bookkeeping department of the Andrew Kuehn Company, a wholesale grocer.
Maythel was married to Ernest Dierks on April 14, 1942 in Pipestone, MN by his brother-in-law, the Rev J.G. Steinmeyer. In May 1942 Ernie was inducted into the Army and stationed at Ft Bliss in El Paso, TX for a year before being deployed overseas. While in El Paso Maythel worked in purchasing at Ft Bliss. Following WW II Maythel & Ernie lived in Washington D.C. and Chamberlin, S.D. and moved to Washburn in 1948.
Maythel felt privileged to be able to be home with her daughters as they were growing up and enjoyed helping them with their activities, especially sewing in 4H. After her family was off to college she worked 10 years at the Washburn Leader when it was owned by the Borlaugs.
Maythel was a member of First Lutheran Church and WELCA and had been president of the women’s organization, serving twice on the church council, once as secretary and again as congregational treasurer, and 11 years as congregational secretary during the pastorate of Elmer Odland. She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and seventh grade confirmation in years past. She especially enjoyed the women’s bible studies and the friends there.
Maythel was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Washburn Study Club for over 50 years and served on the board of Mercer-McLean Meals on Wheels for 10 years. The Study Club was instrumental in starting the meals in Washburn. She also served as State Treasure of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of ND at the time of the national convention in Bismarck in 1982.
She was especially proud of her daughters, all registered nurses, and graduates of the College of Nursing, South Dakota State University in Brookings. Her biggest regret was that none of them practiced in North Dakota. One daughter, Janice, died at the age of 10.
She is survived by her daughters, Judith (John) Marshall, Wausau, WI, Janel (John) Heroff, Cottage Grove, MN, JoAnn Nick, San Juan Capistrano, CA; her grandchildren, John D (Elizabeth) Marshall, Jeffrey (Jessica)Marshall, Joellyn (Jeffrey) Mentink, Andrew (Bridget) Heroff, Sara (Brian) Buffie, Leah Nick, Laurel Donoghue, Paula Nick and her 13 great grandchildren, Page, Alexandra, and Chase Marshall, Zachary and Nolan Marshall, Marcus and Mason Weaver, Ethan and Kallie Buffie, Cadence and William Heroff, Gavin and Ashtynn Donoghue.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest, her daughter Janice, a grandson Quinn Donoghue, a son-in-law Wendell Nick and a sister Lillian.
