The Straub Family moved to California in 1942. Millie and Otto drove his 1936 Chevy. Their passengers were Magdalena, Rita, Mary, Cyril, and Teresa. They were followed by Jake and Teen Edemann and John and Wilma Steinbeck in one car. Jake relieved Millie and Otto sometimes to give them a break. They drove straight through in 3 days and ate a lot of fried chicken and sandwiches.
They initially lived in Pacoima, then bought a house in San Fernando. Millie finished her senior year at San Fernando High School in 1943 and was the first of the Straub children to graduate. While in high school she would babysit for 35 cents/hour. After graduating she worked at Lockheed for 3 years. She met CB on a blind date and they got married on October 22, 1944. She had 5 children within 10 years. The family vacations were to Missouri to visit family members, or on camping trips to national parks and local beaches when the children were young. They went to Las Vegas many times to celebrate their Anniversaries. They went on their first cruise to the Caribbean for their 35th Anniversary. They also cruised around Hawaii and took two cruises to Alaska. They went to Oregon many times to visit Mary, Mark and family.
Millie was a great Avon Sales Lady for 37 years. She belonged to a Grandmother's Club and was president more than once. She also belonged to a Canasta Club.
She dedicated 18 years of her married life to caring for CB when his lung problems required constant oxygen.
She loved to dance, play cards, and played a mean game of Yahtzee. She liked country music. She was a great chauffeur taking the children to different school sport events. She made beautiful dresses for her daughters for special events. She was a great Lakers and Dodgers fan and controlled the television when games were being broadcast. She also liked to watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and watched Sunday Mass for the last 11 years.
Millie had a beautiful smile, dedicated sixty years of marriage to CB, and dearly loved all of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandson. Arrangements under the care of Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, Mission Hills, CA.
