James William Martin, 88, died on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Advocate Eureka Hospital.

Jim was born on September 11, 1930 in Roanoke, IL to Ben P. and Martha (Schott) Martin. On November 19, 1950 Jim married Helen Esther Woertz in Goodfield, IL, she survives.

Also surviving are 5 sons, James (Mark) of Longmont, CO; Tim (Linda) of Eureka; Tom of Highland Park; Dennis (Lori) of Redmond, OR; Dave (Bonnie) of Newnan, GA; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and one sister, Winifred Martin of Roanoke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sally Achterberg who passed away in 2014, and two sisters, Nancy Herman and Annabelle Blunier.

Jim was well known for his mechanical and construction abilities. He was a Boy Scout leader while his 5 sons were in scouts. He enjoyed helping and mentoring their daughter Sally in the grooming and showing of Tennessee Walker horses.

Jim was integral in the construction and establishment of the current Heart House in Eureka. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

Jim was a kind and gentle soul, and was a member of the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church, where he served in many capacities including Trustee and Sunday School teacher. He participated in many World Relief activities.

Funeral services will be held at the Roanoke Apostolic Christian Church at 10am on Friday January 18th. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke and from 9-9:45 am on Friday prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Goodfield-Congerville Apostolic Christian Cemetery.
