Roscoe, Illinois. Michael E. Nelson, 65, passed away May 29, 2013. He died peacefully in his Roscoe home with his wife Robbin at his side. Born Oct. 25, 1947, in Rockford, IL to Elmer and Pauline (Stotts) Nelson. Mike graduated from Rockford East High School in 1965 and from Bradley University in 1969 with a degree in business. Upon graduation he proudly served in the US Army as a military police officer. Mike's professional career was highlighted by his tenure as the Business Manager at WTVO. He often commented that he enjoyed being surrounded by the highly creative staff. In 1997 Mike founded Nelson Accounting. Working with his daughter Dana, they developed a successful business and a strong friendship. Mike and the former Robbin Olson were married July 17, 1971, after meeting five years earlier at the East High tennis courts. They were avid tennis and theater enthusiasts, visiting venues all over the country. Mike shared his love of theater with his daughter Tracey by attending many productions together. In recent years Mike and Robbin enjoyed visiting over a dozen European countries with close friends. None of the places they traveled could ever match the treasured moments Mike spent with his grandsons.
Mike is survived by his wife, Robbin; daughters, Dana (Jason) Long and Tracey Nelson; grandsons, Jonathan and Michael Long; sister, Wanda (Steve) Ferrall; mother-in-law, Marilyn Olson; brother-in-law, James (Annette) Olson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his mother, Pauline Nelson.
Per Mike's wishes a private family burial will be held. Donations can be made the Rock Valley College Starlight Theater, 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL 61114, in his memory.
