Betty was born on April 8, 1939 in Nunda, South Dakota to Amos and Faye (Nelson) Ramsey in the apartment above what is today the Nunda post office. Early in life her family moved to Washington state to work in the armaments industry during World War II. After the war, they returned to Sioux Falls. Betty’s mother died when she was only 12 and she took on some of the responsibility for raising her younger sisters. She attended school in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School. Betty then went to work for Northwestern Bell telephone.

She married Dieter Proehl on April 28, 1961 and they moved to Columbia, South Carolina for a year while Dieter was in the Army. When they returned to Sioux Falls, Betty returned to Northwestern Bell until she quit to raise three sons. She began working again in the late ‘70s at Sioux Valley Hospital and retired in 2002 as assistant to the Vice President of Finance for Sioux Valley Health System.

During her life, Betty enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, gardening, weekends at the lake and time in the Black Hills, her reading club, and trying out a new recipe. Her family will miss her wonderful potato and macaroni salads.

She is survived by her husband, Dieter, and sons Jeff (Carrie), Brian (Julie Erschens), and Kirby (Kris), all of Sioux Falls, grandchildren Mason and Emma Proehl and Tyler and Ellie Munkvold; sister Donna Klitzke of Volga, SD; brother and sister-in-law Klaus and Janet Proehl of Burnsville, MN; nieces Desi (Mike) Robinson of Wauwakee, WI; Alisha (Chris) Dalsin of Welch, MN; Lisa Jordan of Blaine, MN; Stacy Taylor of Pine Haven, WY; and nephew Curt Kirschenman of Kent, OH.

The family would like to extend its appreciation to Jane Gullickson and the staff at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine and the staff at Sanford Hospice Centennial Cottage, and requests that any gifts be made in the form of memorial donations to Sioux Falls Cares, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Shriners Hospital for Children.
