Martin Gara was a 22-year-old Irish diving instructor, with extensive training and experience. Originally from Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, he unfortunately suffered an untimely death on Wednesday, November 19th, 1997 while swimming the Red Sea off Dahab near the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula. He died embracing his friend Conor O'Regan, who also perished at the same time, while doing something he loved. A friend lovingly described his personality as oozing with charisma. He attended Clonkeen College in Deansgrange, then left to work full-time as a diving instructor, which he did until his death.

His funeral service was held at Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Killiney, Ireland on Tuesday, November 25th, 1997. He is interred at Shanganagh cemetery, in County Dublin, Ireland.
