A leading advocate for gay rights in the Roanoke Valley has died. Sam Garrison died after an extended battle with Leukemia. Garrison served as a prosecutor, reaching the highest levels of the legal profession. He was disbarred twice late in his law practice. Garrison was just 27-years-old when he ran for Commonwealth's Attorney in Roanoke. A Republican back then, Garrison carried 30 of the city's 32 precincts. He also played a role in the impeachment of Richard Nixon, having been appointed Chief Minority Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate. He later became a leading Democrat.
