Andrew Wambach, age 88, of Mahnomen, MN, died Friday, January 25, 2019, at Sandford Health, Fargo, ND.

Andrew “Andy” J. Wambach, Jr. was born on November 4, 1930, to Magdalena “Lena” and Andrew Wambach, Sr. on the family farm near Waubun, MN. Andy was the second youngest of six children.

Andy attended Waubun Public High School and graduated from Northwest School of Agriculture in 1948. He then went on to graduate from College of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) in 1952. He proudly served in the United States Army during the years of 1952-1954. While serving in the Korean War, he was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Service Star, and Army Commendation Medal.

When Andy was four years old, he told his mother that he wanted to be a lawyer. Andy practiced law for nearly 60 years. This dream of becoming a lawyer manifested into reality by attending and graduating from William Mitchell School of Law during the years of 1955-1959, after returning home from Korea. He was admitted to the bar on October 1959. He started his private law practice in Mahnomen, MN, on August 13, 1960. While living in Mahnomen, Andy met Beryl (Shambow) Gish whom he married on February 2, 1963, in Duluth, MN. They were married up until her passing on October 26, 2006.

During his years of practicing law, Andy served in many roles including Mahnomen County Attorney (1963-1967). Over the years, Andy also served as Director for the Mahnomen County Country Club, President of the Mahnomen Knights of Columbus Building Association, a trustee of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Director for the Mahnomen County Day Activity Center.

While being a lawyer was a lifelong dream of Andy’s, his faith and family were his two highest priorities. He had a deep faith rooted in Catholicism which was the guide for his life. He was a life-long student of local, national, and world history. Andy was known for his dry, witty sense of humor, ability to draw maps to any location, and his words of wisdom sent to family members on yellow sticky notes. He was always willing to help friends and family figure out a solution to a problem and he freely offered his expertise. Family was so important to Andy. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him joy on a daily basis and he stayed in touch with them through visits, letters, and cards. He had many friends and enjoyed an active social life. Andy was known for being a loyal husband, father, family member, and friend. He loved going to the lake, fishing or hunting with his friends, family gatherings, and simply enjoying the company of those he loved.

Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Beryl; his daughter, Colleen; his great granddaughter, Caroline Pakiz; his parents; and siblings.

Left to mourn his death are his children: Brent (Gayle), Barry (Shar), Marilyn (Marv), Theresa (Tony), Jacqueline, Nicole and Beth (Bruce), as well as Tom, 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Mahnomen, MN.
