Marita Theresa Spors was born on June 2, 1927 at Milbank, South Dakota to parents John and Mary (Hackert) Spors. She attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School in Rosen, MN and attended Bellingham High School. Marita helped on the family farm before her marriage to Robert Schuelke on October 21, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rosen. To this union 6 children were born. After their marriage, they farmed for many years near Nassau. Marita enjoyed taking care of her family and helping when needed on the farm. She was an excellent baker and baked bread every week for her family. She tried to teach us to bake bread but neither one of us picked up her skill. We loved the “heel” when it was fresh out of the oven and with lots of butter! She made a great dessert of a “pink” parfait pie and a Hydrox cookie dessert that the family loved. She taught her daughters to bake and they always made chocolate chip cookies. Marita had a big garden and canned many vegetables. She also enjoyed raising flowers and crocheting afghans and projects for not only her family but also for many others. Robert and Marita had a lake home near Alexandria where she would also cook and entertain her family. When they would catch fish, she would beat them all at cleaning the fish. At the lake, she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to fish and play cards.
They moved to Marietta in 1979. After Robert died, she continued to live in Marietta before moving to Park Ave Apartments in 2011 and then to Grace Haven before she entered the Madison Lutheran Home.
In life, she enjoyed playing many games of cards. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and then St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She was a life time member of the Marietta American Legion Auxiliary, Madison VFW Auxiliary, Marietta Senior Citizens and Augusta Birthday Club.
Left to mourn her death are her children; Catherine (James) Clark of Marietta, MN; Martha Fluegel of Alexandria, MN, Mark (Diane) Schuelke of Madison, MN, Thomas (Cindy) Schuelke of Nassau, MN; Roger (Trish) Schuelke of Marietta, daughter-in-law Patty Schuelke of Madison, MN, 11 grandchildren and many great- grandchildren, her brother Leon (Mariann) Spors of Fort Collins, CO and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary, husband Robert, son Andrew, grandson Adam, son-in-law Michael Fluegel, brothers, Lawrence Spors, Fr. Roman Spors, sister Mildred Karels and Sister Lois Spors.
The family would like to thank all the staff at the Madison Health Care Center, hospital, clinic and Hospice for their excellent care of Marita. Blessed be her memory.
