Malinda Wheatley was born in 1856 in Indiana. She married Alfred Mertz in 1892 in Indiana. (Information from the 1910 U.S. Federal Census). They had no children.

Malinda and Alfred bought a house on North Chester in Indianapolis and lived there the remainder of their lives. Malinda was a Dressmaker. Alfred worked at DuRoad Theatre and later was Proprietor of an Amusement Park.

Malinda died 8 March 1936 in Indianapolis and was buried 12 March 1936 beside her husband Alfred Mertz who had preceded her in death, in Memorial Park Cemetery which was in accordance with her Will. (Information from her death certificate.)

"I'm fairly certain that Malinda was the daughter of Elisha L. and Ruth 'Kinder' Wheatley, and born in Pike County, Indiana. Elisha/Elijah died in Missouri in the Civil War. Ruth remarried to John W. Bauman (marriage listed as Bowman) 11 Nov 1870, Pike County, Indiana. They can be found in Missouri in the 1880 census."

"Malinda was previously married to Louis/Lewis Cooper, 11 Nov 1870, Pike County, Indiana. They had three daughters and divorced, likely around 1881 or 1882. They lived in Gibson County, Indiana in the 1880 census.

1, Martha Melvina 'Cooper' Smith b. abt. 1776 & died in Texas.
2. Lucy Belle 'Cooper' Benton b. abt. 1778 & died in California
