Lera Evelyn Karisch Ephraim entered her eternal glory on Sunday evening, March 17, 2019 at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 24 days.
Lera was born on August 21, 1924 to Walter and Hulda (Noack) Karisch. She became a child of God in Holy Baptism on August 31, 1924 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church by Rev. Alfred Bohot. Rev. Louis Trinklein confirmed her in the Christian faith on April 10, 1938 at St. Michael's. Her confirmation verse was Matthew 6:33, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you".
Winchester was Lera's home for almost all of her life. She was the oldest daughter of seven brothers and sisters. Growing up she worked at "the shop" in town where her dad was a barber and also sold cold drinks, ice cream and candy to those who stopped by.
Her teenage years were full of fun with her friends one of whom was James Charles Ephraim. While James was serving in England during World War II Lera went to Houston staying with her aunt and uncle to work for the telephone company as a switchboard operator. For James calling her was much easier because his calls would go through that switchboard. The distant courtship continued and to Lera's surprise one day she received an engagement ring in the mail. James and Lera were married on a rainy June 9, 1946 by the Rev. Edward R. Rathgeber at St. Michael's. The blessing of their marriage were son, Jim and daughter, Linda.
Lera and James lived on the family farm outside of Winchester along Pin Oak Creek. Even with the work of the farm Lera enjoyed her time with the ladies at the church and in the county Home Demonstration Club and 4-H Clubs.
Celebrating and remembering Lera's life are her children and spouses, Jim (Susan) Ephraim and Linda (John) Dalchau; grandchildren, Kimberly (Sean) O'Farrell, Janna (Damien) McGaugh, Jennifer (Mark) Stringer, Jonathan (Shari) Dalchau and Jason (Linda) Ephraim. The stars in the eyes of Lera and James were their great-grandchildren, Meagan, Madison, Morgan, Jaxon, Ella, Dylan and Sarah.
Also celebrating Lera's life are her sister, Marian Fritsche and brother, Morgan Karisch. Lera also leaves special memories to sisters-in-law, Gladys and Delores as well as nieces and nephews in the Karisch and Ephraim families.
Lera is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 71 years, James; brothers, Elton, Roy and Leslie Karisch; and sister, Yvonne Koenning.
Pallbearers are grandsons and great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Jaxon Dalchau, Jason Ephraim, Sean O'Farrell, Mark and Dylan Stringer and Meagan and Damien McGaugh. Honorary pallbearers are great-granddaughters, Ella, Sarah and Madison.
Memorials in Lera's honor may be given to St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 700 Frio St., Winchester, TX 78945 or Winchester Volunteer Fire Department, 8810 FM 153, Winchester, TX 78945.
