Vietnamese Statesman. He served as the 4th President of Vietnam from September 22, 1992 to September 24, 1997. He joined the resistance against French colonization in 1937 and a year later, joined the Vietnamese Communist Party. He went on to fight both the French and the United States as a leader in the North Vietnamese People's Army. He continued serving in the military after the 1975 re-unification of Vietnam under communist control. During the 1980s, he commanded the Vietnamese army in Cambodia, which helped oust the Khmer Rouge from power in the country. In 1987, he became Minister of National Defense and served in this position until 1991. He was elected president of Vietnam in September of 1992 and served until 1997, when he was replaced by Tran Duc Luong. He also served in the Vietnamese Communist Party politburo from 1982 to 2001. He passed away after a long illness.
