Stephan J. Blaut, a lawyer who was head of a family leather‐tanning business that was founded in Europe, died Sunday of cancer at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan. He was 64 years old and lived at 201 East 62d Street.
Mr. Blaut, a member of the bar in New York, was born in Frankfort, Germany, the son of Arthur Blaut and the former Florence Silverman of New York. He came to the United States in 1933, and graduated from Harvard College and the Harvard Law School.
Continuing a business that had been in the family for several generations, Mr. Bleut was at the time of his death president and chief executive officer of the Virginia Oak Tannery of New York City and Luray, Va. He had also been chairman of the Research Foundation of the Tanners Council.
He is survived by his wife, the former Comelia Blech; a daughter, Julia; two stepdaughters, Claudia Sargent and Andrea Praeger Hacker; a sister, Margaret Hoare of London, and a grandson.
