Barton C. Varney , at the age of 67, passed away on May 4, 2019 at Banner Gateway Hospital after a courageous battle with melanoma cancer. He was born in Worland, Wyoming on March 3, 1952 to Jessie and C Earl Varney, the fourth of five children.

In college Barton joined ROTC, became a member of the drill team and upon graduation was commissioned an officer in the United States Air Force. He served 4 years at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia, and then continued his service as a reservist for 23 years, retiring in the rank of Major. While in college he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served a two year mission for the Church in Bolivia, learning to speak Spanish and Aymara, an ancient Native American language.

He worked in the pulp and paper industry for fifteen years, then worked at Lockheed Martin, Owego, New York for 15 years, earning a Master’s degree in business, and securing 3 patents for his work. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints all his life, he served in many capacities such as Bishop, High Counselor, Teacher and Boy Scout Scoutmaster.

Barton is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his son Joshua (Rebecca) of Springville, Utah; his daughter Leah Varney Jaynes (Jason) of Mesa, Arizona; his son, Jeremy (Allison) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his sister Gail Patrick (Tim) of Manderson, Wyoming and his brothers Ray (Sudie) of Pleasanton, Texas; Earl of Richmond, Virginia; and Eric (Sandy) of Worland, Wyoming. He is further survived by three grand children: Daerik, Lucas and Abigail, and many nieces and nephews.

Barton loved his family, being in the outdoors, serving others and growing gardens. He will be deeply missed.

The funeral service will be graveside at Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery, 7900 East Main Street, Mesa, AZ on May 13, 2019 at 10:00 am with Bishop Boyd presiding. A viewing from 9:00 to 10:00 am will be held in the Funeral Home preceding the graveside service.
