Winnie Katherine Berger left this earth Oct. 4, 2010, in Florence, surrounded by loved ones.
Born May 12, 1926, in Atlanta, Ga., to Robert G. Erwin and Senie King Erwin. She married Charley Berger in Raton, N.M., on April 10, 1946.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Bob Erwin, son-in-law, Dock Hornsby, and great-grandson Xavier Grant Short.

She is survived by five daughters, Charlotte (Dock Hornsby deceased) from Florence, Carol (Kenneth Oren) from Erick, Okla., Kathy (John Huckaby) of Cañon City, and Nancy (Larry Tilley) of Florence and Anne (Ed Hammel) from Pueblo West; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren (one due in March). She adored all of her grandchildren and delighted in each of them. They truly brought a smile to her face.

She also leaves behind a brother, Ken from Florida; sisters, Doris from Florida, Ruth from South Carolina, and sister-in-law Pat from Florida. She had numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She loved to crochet, work puzzles, and loved to watch the news especially the weather. She was always watching for tornadoes and was fearful of them even though she never saw one. She was teased that she should have been a weather girl.

She was a stay-at-home mom and, later on, would work at Estes for 15 years. She had such a great sense of humor and brought joy to all those around her. She loved every moment with her family, especially her grandchildren. All of the grandkids loved their special time with her as she loved them unconditionally.

A special thank you to MaryAnne, Karen, and others at Fremont Regional Hospice who were very loving and caring during this difficult time. And also Dr. Bellanger and her nurse Susie for the care given to Winnie during this time.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the Evangelical Free Church, 3000 East Main St., in Cañon City, with Omar Short officiating. After the service there will be a time of fellowship with a meal.

Memorial donations may be made in Winnie's name to Fremont Regional Hospice, 1439 Main Street, Cañon City, CO 81212. Arrangements handled by Holt Family Funeral Home.
