John followed his sister Christina to America, arriving a few years after her, by 1872. He worked for many years as a bartender at various bars and hotels, including several of those owned by Christina and her enterprising husband John Slinkey, with whom he lived for the rest of their lives, then with their children Lillian and Milton in San Francisco. In 1985, Milton’s granddaughter Carol Slinkey recalled John (whom she knew as a child) as “very staunch” (short & stocky) and “very German” in his mannerisms, quiet and solitary yet kind, and living in an attic apartment on the 3rd floor of the house. A 1930s-era photo shows him nattily dressed yet with a somewhat scruffy, short beard, walking slightly stooped down the street. John never married, and outlived his father by 6 weeks, passing away in his attic room at Milton's home (294 16th Ave., in the Richmond District) age 89 1/2.
