Donald Simon Schmitz, 85, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at Woodlands Senior Park.

Don was born in Fond du Lac on Oct. 15, 1925, a son of Martin and Rose (Moersch) Schmitz.

On Oct. 24, 1953, Don married Rosemary Kelroy at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fond du Lac.

He was a 1943 graduate of St. Mary's Springs Academy.

Don was a third generation farmer operating the Schmitz Family Farm in the Town of Fond du Lac.

He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. Don was a member and leader in the East Central Select Sires, the Wisconsin and Fond du Lac Holstein Associations, Associated Milk Producers Inc. and the Fond du Lac County Farm Bureau. He was a charter member of the Town of Fond du Lac Volunteer Fire Dept. Don served many years as supervisor and chairman for the Town of Fond du Lac.

Don enjoyed all that he did, and loved the time he spent with family, friends and time spent on the farm.

Don is survived by Rosemary, his wife for 58 years; four children, David (Mary) of Fond du Lac, Denise (Joel) Enking of Hurley, Mark (Rose) of Fond du Lac and Steve (Sandy) of Fond du Lac; 10 grandchildren: Anthony and Aaron Schmitz, Leah and Lauren Enking, Alannah and Lindsay Schmitz, Stacy, Megan, Katie and Emily Schmitz; two sisters, Mary (Robert) Baker of Sun City, Ariz., and Catherine (Fritz) Reil of Elkhart Lake; one brother, Raymond (Jan) Schmitz of Frankfort, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Jean Schmitz of Hawaii; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Don in death were his parents; and one brother, Leonard Schmitz.

VISITATION: The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Zacherl Funeral Home, 875 E. Division St., Fond du Lac.

There will also be visitation on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac.

SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at noon.

Entombment will follow at the Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Fond du Lac Area Agri-Business Council's Agricultural Ambassador Program or to the St. Mary's Springs Academy Endowment Fund.

Don's family is grateful to the Woodlands Senior Park Staff and to the Agnesian Hospice Hope Program for the loving care provided to him and his family.
