Perry Melvin Poppen, son of Poppe and Mamie (Ammerman) Poppen, was born January 21, 1910 in Dempster Township, Hamlin County, South Dakota. He spent his early years there and received his education at Dempster School # 3. After his education he farmed in Hamlin County near Dempster.

He was united in marriage to Anna Johnson on November 1, 1933 in Milbank, South Dakota. They farmed for many years and moved into Dempster in 1962, however, they continued to farm until retiring in 1972. Anna died in 1976.

He married Elfreda Kiihl Janssen in Dempster on December 21, 1977. She died on September 7, 1992.

Perry entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in 2000. He died on Thursday, April 26, 2007 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 97 years, 3 months and 5 days.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dempster, served on the elevator board for 21 years, was township clerk for 17 years and was a former member of the Dempster School Board.

Grateful for having shared his life are three sons, Melvin Poppen and his wife Charlene of Lino Lakes, MN, Harold Poppen and his wife Marge of Brookings, Lloyd Poppen and his wife Jan of Watertown, SD; 11 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Markwardt of Freeport, IL and Annie Mennenga of Estelline; two sisters-in-law, Edna Poppen of Madison, SD and Katie Poppen of Estelline; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Perry was preceded in death by his two wives; his parents; three brothers and four sisters.
