Marva Mae Altenhofen, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away June 8, 2019 at Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation. A visitation will be held from noon-1:00pm, Friday, June 14th with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 1:00pm at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66112. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Marva was born July 15, 1924 in Baileyville, Kansas to Frank and Nora Sextro. She graduated from high school in Baileyville. Marva and Justin Altenhofen were joined in marriage on April 10, 1947 in Seneca, Kansas. They moved to Topeka and then Kansas City in the mid-1950s. She raised a family of six children and always had a home-cooked meal ready for her family. Marva enjoyed spending time with family, and painting ceramics, sewing, collecting cookbooks, and working on crossword puzzles. She was known for her delicious homemade breads and pies. Marva was raised Catholic and was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was active in the Altar Society and Shamrock Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Justin; her brothers, Gerald, Leander, Charles, Darrell, Donnie, and Gene.
Marva is survived by her children, Connie Rowe, Doug Altenhofen (Janet), Jane Altenhofen, Alice Bright (John), David Altenhofen (Mariette Buchman), and Joy Shomin (Anthony “Tony”); nine grandchildren, Matthew Bright (Elissa), Jason Bright (Holly), Chris Shomin (Ashley), Beth Heffernan (Andy), Katie Shomin, Jill Valdez (Aaron), Sage Altenhofen, Tyler Altenhofen, and Phoebe Altenhofen; nine great-grandchildren, Baleigh Bright, Landon Bright, Owen Bright, Taylor Bright, Xander Bright, Aiden Shomin, Eli Shomin, Emma Heffernan, and Hunter Valdez; her sister, Carlajean “Tootie” Lightfoot; and other relatives and friends.
