Gerhard James Johnson, 86, of Story City, died Sunday, Jan. 15, at his home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. Burial will be in Roland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today with family present after 6 p.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
Gerhard Johnson was born Feb. 16, 1919, to Helmick and Laura (Brue) Johnson at Groton, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with tours of duty including Africa and Italy. He married Lois Rod Oct. 27, 1945, at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. He was a member of Bergen and the Roland American Legion. He had a trucking business and worked at Iowa State University.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Story City; one daughter, Mary Schultz (Jeff) of Tustin, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Larsen of Groton, S.D., and Lucille Swenson of Aberdeen, S.D.; three grandchildren, Amie, Amanda and Kyle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Joseph, Harry and Ernest.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated memorials to Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland or Timberland Village in Story City.
