He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 30 1968 in Omaha NE and arrived in Vietnam on July 19 where he was assigned for duty with Company A, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In the early morning hours of August 18, the 1st Battalion, 13th Marines Mortar position in the vicinity of the Cao Dai Peninsula in the Phu Loc District of Thua Tien Province came under an enemy attack. A Barrage of some 80 to 100 82mm mortar rounds hit the Marine defenses followed by an attack by sappers. A reaction force was quickly dispatched to reinforce the defenders and break the enemy attack. The Marines suffered many casualties, seven men from the Mortar Battery, 1st Battalion, 13th Marines were killed in action, two men who were on TAD from HQ Battery, 11th Marines, 1st Field Artillery Group, and nine men from Company A including one Marine who died of his wounds.
