Mavis C. Ryan, 88, of Blencoe, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at her home.
Per Mavis’s wishes, her body has been donated for scientific study, and her cremains will be interred in the Onawa Cemetery at a later date. A memorial mass will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 16, 2019, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Blencoe, with Father Michael Erpelding officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Mavis Clara was born on December 23, 1930, in Blencoe, to Frank A. and Martha M. (Determan) Heisterkamp. She attended Blencoe schools and graduated in 1948. She earned her teaching certificate and taught first grade in Blencoe and Onawa.
She married L. Dwayne Ryan on March 26, 1951, in Blencoe. When he returned home from the Korean War, they started their family that would eventually include four children, Dennis, Janet, Sara, and Beth.
Mavis and Dwayne lived in Westminster, Colorado, for eleven years and Chandler, Arizona, for an additional twenty-three years. They moved back to Blencoe in 1994.
She was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Blencoe.
Survivors include her children, Dennis (Jody Ewing) Ryan of Onawa, IA, Janet Ryan of Blencoe, IA, Sara (Charley) Troutz of Chandler, AZ, and Beth Ryan of Santa Clarita, CA; grandchildren, Victoria (Jason) Cox of Whitehouse Station, NJ and Nicole, Daymion, and Devon Troutz, all of Chandler, AZ; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Peyja Cox of Whitehouse Station, NJ; sisters, Yvonne Hanneman of Council Bluffs, IA, Ardith Olson of Onawa, IA, and Gayle Keele of Scottsdale, AZ; brothers, Franklin (Wanda) Heisterkamp of Blencoe, IA and Ron (Geri) Heisterkamp of Mondamin, IA; and sister-in-law, Patricia Heisterkamp of Onawa, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Dwayne Ryan on September 12, 2001; granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Ryan; parents, Frank A. and Martha M. (Determan) Heisterkamp; sister, Verla (Maurice) Benjamin; brothers, Delbert (Yvonne) Heisterkamp, Glenn Heisterkamp, and Roger (Joanne) Heisterkamp; and brothers-in-law, Quentin Hanneman, James Olson, and Dennis Keele.
