Indonesian Statesman. He served as the 3rd President of Indonesia from May 21, 1998 to October 20, 1999. He initially studied engineering in the Netherlands, but later went to Germany to finish his studies and earn his degree. He worked for several firms in Germany before he was recruited by Indonesian President Suharto in 1974 to return to his native country to help industrialize and develop it. In 1978, he became the State Minister for Research and Technology and served in this post until March of 1998, when he was elected vice president. His tenure as vice president last for two months until May of that year when Suharto resigned and he became president. He served for one year before withdrawing his nomination for president. During his tenure, he made several political reforms . After leaving office, he remained an advisor to the government and set up an independent think tank.
