Leo Martin Thies, 71, of Bucyrus died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Saint Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, MO.

He was born Dec. 23, 1930, in Bucyrus, the son of Martin and Gertrude Thies. Following graduation from Wea High School, he attended Rockhurst University for a year and later served overseas int he U.S. Army.

After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Thies operated a dairy farm in Wea with his father and brother, Bill, for the majoity of his adult life. He and his brother also owned and operated Thies Brothers Service Station in Wea for several years. Mr. Thies worked for Briggs Turf Farm in Johnson County before his retirement.

He married Agnes Hannigan in 1960 shortly after her immigration to Kansas City from Glasgow, Scotland. She preceded him in death.

In addition to his wife of 36 years, Agnes, Mr. Thies was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Thies, and a brother, James Thies.

Survivors include his five children, Jerry Thies of Overland Park, Mary Thies of Bucyrus, Anne Gates of Olathe, Eric Thies of Paola and Chris Thies of Overland Park; three brother, Bill Thies, Steve Thies and Danny Thies; one sister, Carol Dover; and 12 grandchildren.

The Rosary was recited Monday eveningat Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Wea. Funeral Mass was Tuesday at the church. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Pallbearers were Brian Clough, Shawn Clough, Jeremy Thies, Ronnie Dover, Leon Thies, Bobby Thies, Stephen Dover, David Thies and Michael Thies.
