Bettye Adele (Steinback) Statham, 94, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away October 2, 2019, at her residence, where she cared for and supported family and friends for nearly 70 years. Bettye was the second daughter of Arthur and Alma (Schuman) Steinback, born on June 29, 1925, which was nine years after her only sibling, Eileen (Steinback) Kerney.

She said her father may have considered her to be a good substitute for the son he never had, and he introduced her early to outdoor activities that she continued to pursue through her lifelong involvement in Girl Scouting. Bettye was active in scout troops and 4-H clubs in her youth, and worked for Raintree Girl Scout Council before her children were born. She returned to Raintree Council after raising her children and worked there well into her 80’s. While there, she had a positive influence on countless young girls and adults through her troop leadership, staff work and training for adult volunteers. Bettye was heavily involved in advancing respect for diversity in the local region through that work. She was also involved in Vanderburgh County Extension Homemaker programs, providing leadership on both the county and individual club levels, and was a longtime member of Altrusa International women’s service organization. Bettye was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church Holy Spirit Campus and choir. She graduated from Reitz High School in 1943 and Evansville College in 1947, with a major in Sociology. While at EC, she was an active member of Gamma Epsilon Sigma sorority, an involvement that continued throughout her adult life. Bettye was also a member of “hillbillies,” a group of depression-era children who grew up on the 3000 block of West Michigan Street in Evansville, an isolated block at the top of “the steep hill.” As adults, the “hillbillies” had monthly luncheons celebrating their friendship.

Bettye is survived by her daughters, Anne (Michael Zupan) Statham of Evansville, IN and Karen (James) Cramer of Spokane, WA; her grandchildren, Alexandra and Andrew Statham; along with nephews, William and Robert Kerney.

Bettye was preceded in death by her parents and sister; her husband, Lowell Statham, Jr.; her son, Charles Statham; her nephew, John Kerney; and her cousin, Oscar Jeude.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Annunciation Catholic Church Holy Spirit Campus, 1800 Lodge Ave., Evansville, IN 47714, with Father Alex Zenthoefer celebrating.
