Leona D. Voss, 102, of Sumner and formerly of Alpha, died Monday, October 7, 2019, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, October 10, 2019, at St. John’s Lutheran Church-Stapelton in rural Waucoma with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, October 9th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday.

Leona Doris, daughter of Herman and Sophia (Nuss) Staack, was born February 26, 1917, at the family’s home, rural Sumner. She was baptized on March 25, 1917, and confirmed April 13, 1930, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Grove Hill in Oran. Leona received her early education in the Parochial School, prior to graduating from Oran High School in 1935.

On June 28, 1936, she was united in marriage with August Voss at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Grove Hill.

Leona worked at Pines Motel in Postville for a few years before working at the Boot Hill Supper Club in West Union for several years.

Leona was a long time faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church-Stapelton.

She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, dancing, music, animals, but her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Carole Steinbronn of Westgate; son, Russell (Patty) Voss of Alpha; eleven grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren; and twenty-great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, August on March 26, 1977; son, James on November 1, 1994; son-in-law, Raymond Steinbronn; and her seven siblings.
