Ray L. Abbas was born December 11, 1916 at Hubbard, Iowa to Chris and Leona (Brown) Abbas. Ray attended school in Iowa Falls, Iowa and graduated in 1934. He attended one year of Ellsworth College then worked at International Harvester in Davenport. Ray met Alma and the two were married on April 15, 1941 in Whittemore. On July 5, 1941, Ray enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country until August 1, 1944. The couple then lived in Des Moines, Davenport and Danbury, Wisconsin before retiring in 1975. Ray and Alma moved to Whittemore in 1997. Ray became a resident of the Good Samaritan Community on August 18, 2004 and died there on Monday, September 6, 2004 at the age of 87.
Ray enjoyed all sports, especially golf, bowling, hunting, and fishing. He loved to play cards, watch the Chicago Cubs and tell stories. Ray was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church as well as the American Legion, Elks and Moose Clubs and the Holy Name Society. Ray and Alma enjoyed traveling to Texas and Arizona to spend their winters.
Survivors include his wife Alma of Whittemore, Iowa; one daughter Janet Lombardo and husband Gene of Sun Valley, Idaho; one son James Abbas and wife Carol of Davenport, Iowa; two grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by his parents.
