In 1885, Louis was born in Kovel, then part of the Russian Empire. He emigrated from there aboard the SS Grant via Hamburg, Germany, and in 1910 filed his Declaration of Intention to become an U.S. citizen. At that time he was employed in the garment industry as a cutter and lived on Madison Street in New York City's Lower East Side. He met Rose Geyer in New York, and they married on 10 June 1911. Their children Max and Matilda were both born in New York.

Louis filed for the WWI Draft Registration in 1918. At that time he lived with his family on Windemere Avenue in Highland Park, and was employed as an assembler at the Ford Motor Company, which was then selling its Model T.

Louis died at the age of 64 at Harper Hospital in Detroit.

Louis and Rose's daughter Matilda Brandwine greatly contributed to Detroit's Jewish community. Among her many legacies is her founding of the Irwin I. Cohen Cemetery Index of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, which was used to obtain Louis' burial information.
