On 25 November 1878, Mary (age 20) married Peter Hermes (age 25), son of Peter Mathias Hermes and Veronica Miess, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Long Prairie, Todd County, Minnesota. (Minnesota Official Marriage System) Her husband’s 1935 obituary, however, gives the marriage date as 15 November 1878. Mary and Peter had 6 daughters – two of whom died young.
After their marriage, Peter and Mary settled on a farm in Ward, Todd County, Minnestoa. This farm was next to the farm of Veronica Hermes, Peter’s widowed mother. According to Peter’s 1935 obituary, Veronica as a “…widowed mother and six small children came to Todd county in the covered wagon days, making the trip from Dubuque via steamboat to St. Paul, and then over land to this county, settling on a homestead in Ward township. Here Mr. Hermes [Peter] grew to manhood.” (Long Prairie Leader, 1 August 1935, page 9, column 1)
By 1885, Peter and Mary had moved from Ward to the nearby Village of Browerville where Peter was a “machine agent” in the implement business. Peter’s business was one of the first businesses established in Browerville. Peter, along with Mary’s brother, Peter Recktenwald, were founders and worked on the building of the first St. Peter’s Church in Browerville.
Apparently, Mary (age 60) died 5 November 1918. No death record or obituary has been found. She is buried at Christ the King Cemetery in Browerville. Peter died in 1935 and is also buried in the same cemetery.
