Private Louis B. Thor served in World War 1 in the United States Army
86th "Black Hawk" Infantry Division,
American Expeditionary Forces
311th Engineers Regiment
Company "B"
Louis did his service training at Camp Grant, Rockford, Illinois. Leaving July 22, 1918, his older brother Gus was the only person that said good-bye and wished him well. Orders sent him to France September of 1918.
A letter received from the Red Cross stated date of his death 5 October, 1918 and date of burial was 6 October 1918.
He died from pneumonia in the Village of Beau Desert, near the city of Bordeaux, France at the Base Hospital No. 22. More American soldiers, sailors, and marines would succumb to influenza and pneumonia than would die on the battlefields of the Great War. He was first buried at a different location and then moved 325 miles to his present day burial site.
Note his middle name was misspelled on his monument.
The Army of the United States Certificate states sent to family September 1919,
"Louis B. Thor died with Honor in the Service of his Country"
His Mother preceded him in death in 1914. Louis had seven sisters and three brothers, he was the youngest of Michael and Maria Thor's children.
