Lawrence Merle Ricketts was born on October 20, 1886, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Samuel Joseph and Ida May Ford Ricketts, and was their only child.

According to his obituary, L Merle Ricketts was a life-long resident, had graduated from City College and also earned a certificate in drafting from the Maryland Institute.

On December 17, 1912 Lawrence M. Ricketts and Anna Ruth Davis, daughter of Milton Cornelius and Edith Mary "Mollie" Fairall Davis were married in the District of Colombia.

He started out as an office boy at the Poole Foundry and Machine Company around 1905. He eventually came to own the company and was its president for 20 years and retired in 1972.

Mr. Ricketts was a member of the Grace United Methodist church, belonged to the Baltimore Country Club and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was on the governing board of the Masonic Home of Maryland, located in Cockeysville.

His wife Ruth Davis Ricketts died on November 27, 1968. Their son Lt. Milton Ernest Ricketts, died on May 8, 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Seas. He was in charge of a damage control party on board the USS Yorktown. When a Japanese bomb exploded, he was able to take on successful fire-fighting measures despite being mortally wounded. For his actions, Lt Ricketts was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Mr. L. Merle Ricketts was survived by a daughter, Mrs Benjamin S (Dorothy) Crosby Jr of Timonium; a son, Lawrence M. Ricketts, Jr of Cockeysville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held on January 25, 1975, at the William Cooks-Brooks Funeral Home at 11 A.M. Internment was at the Druid Ridge Cemetery. Contributions could be made to Grace Methodist Church or the Maryland Masonic Home.

Note: Their daughter Dorothy Ricketts Crosby, who was born about 1921/1922 in Baltimore, Maryland, died on February 19, 2004 in Baltimore, Maryland. She married Dr Benjamin Salts Crosby, Jr. in 1944. They had three children: a son of Medford, Massachusetts; another son of Willston, South Carolina, and a daughter of New Park, Pennsylvania. Dr Benjamin Salts Crosby, Jr., died on June 15, 2007.
