Thomas Benz, son of John G. and Minnie Benz, was born in Melvin, Iowa on November 23, 1891. He lived his youth, attended school, and grew to young manhood in the Melvin community.He served in the Army in WW I overseas.

He was united in marriage to Hanna Rudloff of Doon, Iowa on April 6, 1919 at Sioux City, Iowa. Their entire married life was lived in Melvin. He was actively engaged in the Melvin Savings Bank from 1916 until the time of his death at the Osceola Community Hospital at Sibley, Iowa on November 19, 1982 at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 26 days.

He is survived by his wife, Hanna, of Melvin; one son, Edward, of Laurens, Ia., and one daughter, Mrs. Robert(Evelyn) Timmons of Hartley, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one brother, Roy, of Melvin, Iowa and one sister, Alvena Naab of Melvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John, on June 25,1981, one granddaughter, Kim, two brothers and one sister.

He was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Melvin, Iowa, a charter member of the Melvin American Legion and the Melvin Kiwanis Club. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Melvin on October 22, 1893 and confirmed in 1906.

Funeral services were held November22 at the American Lutheran Church of Melvin with Rev. Dale Jenson officiating. Casketbearers were grandsons: Gary Benz, Jim Benz, Phil Timmons, Jack Benz, Scott Benz and Fletcher Miller, Jr. Interment was in Baker Township Cemetery at Melvin with the flag presentation by the Melvin American Legion. The Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge.
