Dr. Sylvester M. Schmitz. 51. of 41 First St., Mansfield, dean of the School of Fine and Applied Arts at Mansfield State College. died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1974 at Arnot- Ogden Hospital.
Dr. Schmitz was named dean of the school in 1973 and served as vice president of academic affairs at Mansfield from 1966 to 1973. He had served as chairman of the music department of the college from 1959 until 1966.
A native of Wisconsin. Dr. Schmitz received his bachelor of music degree from Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisc. and his masters and Ph.D degrees from Northwestern University.
He was a music instructor of junion and senior high schools in Appleton from 1946 to 1949. a private instructor on the Northwestem band staff from 1949 to 1950. and instrumental director of state clinics and workshops at the University of Connecticut before going to Mansfield.
Dr. Schmitz was born Feb. 17, 1923 in Unity, Wis. the son of late Richard and Louise Bartel Schmitz. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife. Janet Lee Schmitz; one daughter, Lee A. Schmitz, at home; two sons, Geoffrey and Steven, both at home; one sister, Miss Frances Schmitz of Malone, Wis.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
