Mark Paul Medved, 81 years old, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away on May 19th at his home. Mr. Medved was born on December 2, 1923, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of the late Max Peter and Theresa Strutzel Medved. He spent his elementary school years looking after his maternal grandmother, Mary Sterbenz Strutzel, in Olpe, Kansas, following the death of his mother. Following graduation from Wyandotte High School in 1942, he entered Kansas State University in the Mechanical Engineering Division where he completed his first two years prior to World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific theater for his tour of duty.

Immediately following the war he completed his B.S.M.E. at Kansas State University in 1949. His first three years of employment were spent at Geophysical Service in Dallas, Texas, followed by employment in his native Kansas at Butler Manufacturing. He was a Founding Partner of Hellmer and Medved Consulting Engineers, Inc., retrofitting and re-engineering such Kansas City landmarks as Kemper Arena. He continued successfully in business for 32 years, pioneering the retrofitting of buildings across the United State for energy and cost efficiencies now standard today.

He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Kansas State Society of Professional Engineers and the Missouri State Society of Professional Engineers throughout his career. His strong civic convictions were manifest by his involvement with the founding of the city of Leawood, serving as its Councilman for two years, and volunteering for another 42 years of service to the Leawood Lions Club, serving as its President in 2004.

Until his death Mr. Medved was a member of the Leawood Wallstreeters' Investment Club. He also participated in the judging of the Science Pioneers' Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair for ten years, as well as selecting the recipient of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers' special award.

Mr. Medved was a founding father of Cure' of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood, Kansas, where he remained a parishioner until his death. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus within the parish. He was also a Father's Club officer at the Notre Dame de Sion College Preparatory School for 20 years during the education of his two biological daughters.

He was an active member of the Serra Clubs of Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas, for 42 years, strongly supporting the recruitment of seminarians, being a member of the Board of Directors at his death. He was awarded the statue of Juniper Serra for his work within the club when he was a member of Serra of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mr. Medved was predeceased by his first wife of 29 years, Dorothy Meyer Medved, whom he married at Redemptorist Church in Kansas City, Missouri in 1952. He was survived by his second wife, Penelope "Penny" Ecclestone Medved, whom he married in 1984. Also surviving him were his two daughters from his first marriage, Diane and her husband and Marilyn; and his daughter from his second marriage, Connie and her husband, and five grandchildren. He was also survived by his brother, Thomas Milton Medved, and his wife; and three sisters, Mary Maxine Harman of Kansas City, Kansas, Theresa "Jeannie" Blackmer of Olathe, Kansas, and Corrine "Corky" Sullivan of Overland Park, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Tuesday evening at Cure of Ars Church in Leawood, Kansas, where the parish Rosary was prayed later that night. The Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday morning. Entombment followed in Resurrection Mausoleum in Lenexa, Kansas.
