In 1949 she met Alfred Munk, a government relations analyst for Texaco, and they were married the following year. They were together for the next 52 years. Their first child, Peter, was born in 1952, and their second, Karen, was born in 1954. The family spent the next ten years in Connecticut. In 1964 Alfred took a new job at the headquarters of Amoco Oil, and Chicago became the family’s new home. Following Alfred’s retirement in 1990, they moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they build a retirement home, complete with a 19th century log cabin, which they restored and moved to their property. Frances made many new friends in Hendersonville. She and Al enjoyed travelling, and were supporters of the Brevard Music Center and the Arboretum in Asheville. She and Al were active members of the St. John in the Wilderness parish.
After her children were born, Frances dedicated her time to her family. She devoted many years to volunteer work for the blind, transcribing books into Braille and later into audio recordings. In Chicago she served on the Altar Guild of St. Augustines’s Church and in Hendersonville, she and Al volunteered at the Rescue Mission and at Johnson Farm.
Frances was predeceased by her husband Alfred, who died in 2002, and by her brothers Frank and Albert. She is survived by her son Peter Munk and his wife Darlene, of Santa Barbara, California and her daughter Karen Demastus and her husband Dale, of Scottsdale, Arizona. She is also survived by four grandchildren, James, Laura, Cristina, and Liza and by her great-grandson Skylar, six nephews and five nieces.
Frances’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Carolina Village for their care and support over the past ten years.
The memorial service will be at St. John-in-the-Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock, on Monday, December 4, at 1 pm.
