18-YEAR-OLD DROWNS
WEST BEND—Peter Gassner, 18, of Route 1, Campbellsport, drowned early today while swimming with friends at a private pond just northeast of here.
Washington County officials received a call at 2:58 a.m. and dragging operations were begun. Attempts at locating the body were unsuccessful until after 4:30 a.m. when three local skin-divers were called. They found the body approximately 15 minutes later.
Gassner, with a group of five, including his brother, Tom, stopped at the pond located on the William Barber property, 1844 Wallace Lake Road.
Gassner asked if he could walk across the pond as he couldn't swim. He was told by someone in the group that he could only walk across at the north end. No one spoke to or saw him after that.
