Friend Injured; Driver Held for Manslaughter
Dorothy and her companion, Gene Roberts, a Covina high school classmate, were walking west on Olive street when the accident occurred at 6:45 p.m. Saturday. They had just left Dorothy's home on their way to the movies. He was treated at Covina hospital and later removed to the home of his parents.
The driver (name withheld), age 30, was held to be criminally responsible for the death of the high school student, who was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Armstrong, 959 Bleecker street, Baldwin Park. The driver was charged with with manslaughter and hit-run driving. His license had been revoked, due to previous drunk driving charge, and had not been restored yet.
In addition to her mother and father, Dorothy's stricken family includes two brothers, Russell, 18 and James, 12, and a baby sister, Joyce, age eight months.
Dorothy was born July 12, 1930, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and came to Baldwin Park with her family in 1941. She attended Baldwin Park grammar school. At the time of her death she was a student at Covina union high school.
Pallbearers at her funeral were six of her fellow students, Buck Bradford, Scot Henderson, Don Kaneen, Harold Hickey, Al Heald and Edwin Dittberner. Honorary pallbearers were Doris Thomas, Shirley Haworth, Geneva NIxon, Al Jean Baldwin, Ida May Baldwin, and Pat Mathews.
The fueneral services were conducted yesterday afternoon by the Rev. George S. Thompson, Baptist minister, at Custer and Christiansen funeral home. Her body was laid to rest at Oakdale cemetery yesterday afternoon.
