Betty Mitzel, 96, Bowdle, died Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Morningstar Assisted Living, Rapid City, SD.
Elizabeth Veronica Geier, daughter of Margaretha (Heilman) and Frank Geier, was born August 23, 1923 at the Geier farm five miles north of Bowdle. Betty, as she was commonly known, was brought up on the Geier farm. Her formal education consisted of Modena TWSHP Rural School and Bowdle High School, Class of 1943. She then taught rural school for two years. Betty married Michael Mitzel at Bowdle on October 25, 1943. They settled on Betty’s home place. In 1976, Betty and Mike moved into Bowdle and, since 2015, lived in Rapid City. Betty was a faithful member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and St. Augustine’s Altar Society. She also belonged to the Bowdle Mother’s Club and the Bowdle Golf Club. Betty enjoyed sewing (having made dresses for her granddaughters), gardening, cooking, quilting, golfing (being known as a reliable putter), and dancing. Betty’s grandchildren were especially fond of her homemade pickles.

Betty is survived by four sons—Jerry (Barb) Mitzel and Ron (Marlene) Mitzel of Rapid City, Richard (Susan) Mitzel of Bowdle, and Frank (Teresa) Mitzel of Houston, TX; one daughter, Mary (Victor) Fischer of Bowdle; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandchild; daughter-in-law, Joan Mitzel, of Rochester, Michigan; and one sister, Maggie Fritz, of Aberdeen, SD.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, on August 23, 2019; her father, Frank, on June 18, 1969; her mother, Margaretha, on July 23, 1994; Her son, Michael; three sisters; and one grandson.
A private, family Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 15, 2020 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Bowdle, with Father Darin Schmidt, Celebrant. Pianist will be Margy Bobby, song leaders will be Jeanne Bieber and Anne Thomsen, and the vocal selections will be “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Blest Are They”, “Lord, you have Come”, and “You Are Mine”. Lectors will be Jeni Leberknight and Kim Oberloh. Placing the Pall will be Betty’s children—Jerry, Ron, Richard, Frank, and Mary. Casketbearers will be Kevin Fischer of Tolstoy, SD; Travis Fischer of Aberdeen; Veronica Fischer of Groton, SD; and Aaron Oberloh, Kimberly Oberloh, and Scott Mitzel of Rapid City.
The Funeral will be livestreamed on the Lien Family Funeral Care Facebook page and can be found on this website late Monday afternoon the 15th.
Public visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Sunday at Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
